State of health of the Ceresio

The Ceresio, in  Latin and dialectal origin  means “Lake of the cherry trees”, is an international lake of approximately 50 square kilometres (63% in Switzerland and 37% in Italy), tightened (medium width approximately a kilometre), deep (until 288 meters) in the river basin to north of the bridge dam between Melide and Bissone, much less deep in the southern basin. The existence of the bridge dam and the lack of important feeder river with a single emissary (Tresa river) hinder the reciprocation of the water of the lake.

The whole Swiss basin of the lake is connected to 11 water cleaning systems:
  • Since 1996 the bath in the lake is authorized in all the approximately 50 existing bathing establishments along the Swiss shores (analyses of the water are executed respecting the norms of the European Union that are stricter than those enforced ones in Switzerland)
  • the agglomerates of Vico Morcote, Barbengo, Cassarate, Viganello, Castagnola, Aldesago, Brè, Paradiso and Gandria take drinkable water from the lake (source: environmental studies Laboratory)
