The Ceresio (its official name), which from Latin and dialect origins means "Lake of the Cherries", is an international lake of about 50 square kilometers (63% in Switzerland and 37% in Italy) and up to 288 meters deep. Thanks to the attention and implementation of the SNL ecological policy and to the 11 water purification plants, swimming in the lake is permitted in all 50 existing beach clubs, with Morcote, Barbengo, Cassarate, Viganello, Castagnola, Aldesago, Bre, Paradiso and Gandria providing drinking water taken from the lake.
